Drug Plus Laser Heat Effective in Managing Retinal Tumors
in Children
Chemothermotherapy (CTT), the combined use of an injected
chemotherapy drug and laser heat delivered through the pupil,
is effective in treating small-to-medium-sized retinoblastoma
tumors in children, thereby avoiding use of external beam
radiation and its frequent adverse health effects in most
cases.
LASIK
for Farsightedness Effective in Correcting
The use of LASIK for correction of farsightedness also is
effective in correcting cross-eyes in some patients. However,
accurately predicting which patients will most likely benefit
from the procedure remains highly problematic.
Academy's
Jensen Urges House Subcommittee to Appropriate More for Eye
Research
At a recent funding hearing, Dr. Jensen called for a FY2003
budget of $692 million, an 18.7 percent increase from last
fiscal year. This amount stands in stark contrast to President
Bush's proposed NEI budget of $620 million.
